Transforming communities by changing the way we lead
Leadership of Place is a targeted and tailored leadership capacity building and research programme delivered in partnership with the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies (CURS) at the University of Birmingham.
It will help leaders of place combine the required spatial literacy with the relational skills to develop collective understanding and common purpose, key to delivering large scale projects.
From Autumn 2009, regional learning hubs will provide tailor made support, networks, learning resources and events. The focus of the hubs will be based on analysis of the leadership requirements of targeted areas in each of English regions and London.
The programme has developed from our research, Leadership of Place for the Knowledge Based Economy. The research and case studies aim to understand and explain the strategic leadership challenges in a new context - economic development, planning and regeneration activity in the knowledge-based economy (KBE). You can download the research summary and full report as PDF files - they are listed on the right.

The challenge
Changes are taking place in urban and regional economic development, planning and regeneration task with a move from a traditional line management activity within single organisations to a more complex holistic and integrated ‘leadership of place’. This means that we needed to rethink approaches to leadership and to address current and future challenges associated with specific policy and place contexts.
The Leadership of Place aims to:
Embed the use of a ‘new’ leadership of place model across sustainable communities, housing and regeneration sector.
Create Leaders of Place who have the necessary technical skills and relational attributes to create better places.
Help leaders reconcile very different organisational priorities, plans, drivers and cultures within a broad spectrum of engagement and involvement.
The recent economic downturn has heightened the complexity of the operating environment, and the programme will help provide new tools that plan for risk and resilience.
Create and facilitate new ways of engaging with others, collaborative working and the sharing of knowledge and expertise.
Regionally focus, national impact
The programme will be place based and will draw upon a diagnostic of current leadership capacity and an understanding of the unique challenges identified in each area.
It is intended the programme will play a role in understanding and supporting the delivery of the HCA’s single conversation and increase capability to deliver in targeted areas.
