Brownfield Skills Strategy - Background
The Brownfield Skills Strategy aims to boost skills that will ensure the effective and efficient reuse of brownfield land. The Government aims to build 3 million new homes by 2020, with at least 60% to be built on redeveloped brownfield sites. Our research has shown that by 2012 there could be a minimum workforce shortfall of 75%, or 680,000 workers, engaged in brownfield development, including 300,000 engineers and developers and 140,000 surveyors.
Brownfield Skills Strategy - Consultation Responses
The public consultation period for the Draft Brownfield Skills Strategy occurred between 4 March and 10 June 2008. Forty-six repsonses were received. Overall, respondents were very supportive of the proposed strategy, with 34 making pledges of support. Responses were submitted by representative groups, organisations, teams and individuals involved in promoting, or who are reliant upon the skills needed for the reuse of brownfield land. All responses that did not request confidentiality are downloadable in PDF format. Cover sheets with contact details have been removed from all template responses. Brownfield skills strategy gains momentum
Responses to the draft Brownfield Skills Strategy that recently underwent public consultation to gauge sector support for the first strategy of its kind, is published today by ASC and national regeneration agency English Partnerships. The drive to increase regeneration professionals and improve brownfield skills has received widespread support and endorsement from organisations including Construction Skills, Environment Agency, Environment Protection UK, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, Academy for Urbanism, Sustainable Homes and the Landscape Institute.

Brownfield research reinforces urgent need to tackle skills gaps
Research informing the draft Brownfield Skills Strategy is published today by ASC and national regeneration agency English Partnerships. The draft Brownfield Skills Strategy, which is open for public consultation until 27th May, is designed to increase the number of regeneration professionals and improve brownfield skills levels in support of government aspirations to build 3 million new homes by 2020. At least 60% of the new homes will be built on redeveloped brownfield sites. Key findings identified by the published research (Evidence Base) are that by 2012 there could be a minimum workforce shortfall of 75%, or 680,000 workers, engaged in brownfield development, including 300,000 engineers and developers and 140,000 surveyors.
Urgent action needed to tackle brownfield skills gap
A new national strategy designed to increase the number of regeneration professionals and improve brownfield skills levels in support of government aspirations to build 3 million new homes, has been launched for public consultation by English Partnerships and ASC. The national Brownfield Skills Strategy calls for cross-sector support and action to address a significant projected shortfall of housing and regeneration practitioners with the necessary skills to redevelop brownfield sites, on which at least 60% of the new homes will be built. Research to inform the draft strategy – the most comprehensive of its kind to date – identified that by 2012 there could be a minimum workforce shortfall of 75%, or 680,000 workers, including 300,000 engineers and developers and 140,000 surveyors.
