ASC has moved closer to achieving its ambitious plan to ensure the country’s first ever Foundation Degree in Sustainable Communities is available in every English region by 2011.
Following the launch of the landmark programme at Sheffield Hallam University in January 2008, the Rt Hon. Nick Brown MP launched the course at Northumbria University on Friday.
Mr Brown said: "This is a first for the North East of England and a great new announcement from Northumbria University. The announcement of a brand new foundation degree in sustainable communities at Northumbria University as a three year part time course will provide a first step on the ladder to those looking for a career in public service or the private sector. The course can lead on to a BA Honours in a range of disciplines. The new course looks to the future and I am sure that it will prove popular."

The three-year course has secured professional accreditation from the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH). Students who successfully graduate from Northumbria University can achieve membership of CIH.
London Metropolitan University and Southampton Solent University hope to run the degree from next year.
Amanda Lane, ASC's Learning and Resources Manager said:
"This is a major accomplishment for ASC and supports our drive to increase access to careers in the sector. As well as teaching students about the core disciplines of housing, planning, design and environmental management, the Foundation Degree equips students with a multi-disciplinary approach to break down barriers between professions. It also has an emphasis on the generic skills needed to have a real impact on communities, including community consultation."
