CATEGORY WINNER: Green Horizons Housing, London
Over the past decade, Green Horizons has been at the forefront of the regeneration of Edmonton Green in Enfield, contending with issues ranging from a high incidence of prostitution and drug dealing to anti-social behaviour and a poor physical environment.
The past decade has seen the start and successful completion of the regeneration programme’s main building programme. This involved the replacing of four tower blocks containing 734 dwellings with 272 new homes with gardens. Over 450 new homes were provided in two new developments, while a further three tower blocks containing over 500 homes were fully refurbished.
Castlefields Regeneration Partnership, Halton, Cheshire
Halton Borough Council founded CRP to tackle high levels of deprivation on Castlefields, a 1960s estate in Runcorn built to deal with overcrowding on Merseyside. The partnership has brought together a wide range of key public agencies and housing bodies to turn around the estate and transform it into a sustainable community. Achievements to date include a new park for local children, extensive public realm improvements and 500 new homes.
Mandale, Stockton
Residents and the ward councillor of the deprived Mandale area of Stockton-on-Tees formed a residents’ group in 2001 to tackle the estate’s poor housing conditions. After lobbying central and local government, the group won a grant to undertake a detailed study of what needed to be done on the estate. This led in 2003 to the launch of major regeneration programme that is still ongoing.
Minehead Enterprise Park, Somerset
An economically challenged area was transformed through partnership working to create an enterprise park using £6.5 million of public funding. The focal point of the development is a turntable used by steam engines running on the West Somerset Railway that draws tourists to the area. The park has also boosted the local economy through the creation of over 1,000sq metres of new workspace. Initial local resistance to the park was overcome through extensive public consultation.
